New WHMIS compared to old WHMIS
WHMIS 1988 was a standard workplace safety regulations that existed for all designated Canadian workplaces. WHMIS is essentially WHMIS 1988 and includes revisions for GHS, an added set of regulations deigned to make international trade and communication easier.
The addition of GHS doesn’t change or eliminate regulations only updates the preexisting ones from 1988. 2015’s main difference from WHMIS 1988 is the addition of new classifications and methods of communication. GHS brings two main elements to the table, the extended classification of hazards and chemicals that includes pure and mixed chemicals, and the more advanced communication that provides more information on the label and on a separate safety data sheet. Both of these components are components that many other countries in the world use. Shared regulations makes the transport of hazardous materials much more efficient and protects worker health and safety.
In terms of actually taking the course, the training time is slightly longer for 2015. After taking both courses, WHMIS is easier to learn and understand.
